ACTIVITY

Waste water treatment and reuse

Our wastewater treatment plants and quality measurement systems feature the latest advances in energy consumption reduction and environmentally sustainable measures.

Waste water treatment and reuse

By regenerating water, we are giving it a second life and making use of an additional resource as important as water in perfect sanitary conditions for uses such as irrigation of green spaces, street cleaning, agriculture, etc.

Our objective is to guarantee the water is returned to the environment in the best conditions or, even better, to promote its reuse. We comply with the applicable legislation in each of our facilities and use preventive control tools to reduce the risk of possible polluting discharges.

At Sacyr Agua we always work to offer the best quality, which forces us to innovate permanently, as demonstrated by our numerous projects that deal with analyzing, detecting and eliminating contaminants of emerging concern. Proof of this is the pilot project that we are running to analyze the presence of microplastics in one of our facilities and subsequently capture and eliminate them sustainably, since no waste is generated during the process.

La Gavia Water Treatment Plant

Canal de Isabel II, Madrid, awarded Sacyr Agua the operations and maintenance contract for the La Gavia water treatment plant. The plant treats up to 172,800 cubic meters of water a day from two collectors (Gavia I and Gavia II) and the excess flow from the La China WWTP.

The plant uses tertiary treatment to convert all of its treated water into regenerated water, so that excellent quality water can be returned to the Manzanares river. Part of the water is reused to irrigate green spaces, for street cleaning and for golf course hazards.

The infrastructure includes facilities to produce green power from the liquid waste generated by citizens, which is treated and then converted into biogas.

The facility has a gas station to refuel vehicles that run on renewable biogas.

The bidding process included criteria such as using vehicles with a reduced carbon footprint, reducing the sound level of industrial vehicles, and guaranteeing that samples taken from the water line would be retained.

Santa Cruz de Tenerife

Since 2005, Sacyr Water has been managing, through the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Public-Private Water Corporation (EMMASA), the total water cycle for the 209,000 inhabitants of the city of Santa Cruz de Tenerife: i.e., it is responsible for water catchment, desalination, treatment, distribution, sewers, purification, regeneration and management for the city's customers.

The facility has thirteen wells drilled to a depth of 36 meters along the coast and thirteen submersible pumps that extract the water from the sea before filtering it.

To carry out this essential work on an island where water scarcity makes it necessary to seek new sources of water, we have a multidisciplinary and versatile team with a common goal: supplying quality water to the people of Tenerife with the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.

The excellent work being carried out includes modernizing and digitalizing the water cycle to reduce losses in the distribution systems and improve the wastewater treatment infrastructures. The improvements have included replacing the meters with electronic ones and installing sensors in the cycle to boost its efficiency.

The desalination plant is a benchmark infrastructure on the island thanks to its innovative system. This novel process employs an energy recovery system in which almost all the energy in the brine is recovered, which allows a better energy consumption ratio. The infrastructure has three reverse osmosis racks and, for every 100 liters of water we take out of the sea, 47 liters go to the drinking water supply. Thus, almost 60% of the water consumed in Santa Cruz de Tenerife comes from this desalination plant.
