We are water, we are Sacyr

We have used the 17 SGDs and their 169 goals to make our guide to focus our sustainability efforts. On World Water Day, let’s remember these initiatives and projects aimed at fulfilling SDG 6: Clean water and sanitation.

At Sacyr we make an efficient water use and improve water quality, by reducing pollution and waste volume, by promoting recycling and reuse. Our goal for 2025 is to reduce our water consumption by 10%.

In 2022 we made progress on this commitment and achieved multiple significant milestones:

  • Sacyr is the first company in the infrastructure sector to certify its water footprint under the ISO 14046 standards. The certification was carried out by AENOR, that ratified the information, data and results included in the company’s assessment report.
  • In 2022 we carried out an Ingenium campaign in which our professionals presented innovative ideas to improve the efficiency of our water contracts. We received 125 proposals from six countries, a huge success!
  • Thanks to our desalination plants, we could divert 14% of the water generated to agricultural use in areas with heavy water stress.
  • The amount of water collected in facility operations for its treatment and distribution to urban locations was 150.8 million m3, which represented 88,34 million m3 in areas with water stress.
  • The amount of water generated in our purification facilities was 13.7 million m3, which represented a 20% increase on the water contribution of 2021.
  • Recycled or reused water in our operations was 19,53% of the total water usage for self-consumption.
  • We collected and used 649,84 m3 from rainwater.
  • We continue to advance on the digitization of our services as part of our commitment to sustainability and efficiency. One of the success stories implemented in 2022 was the use of an autonomous drone to inspect wastewater manifolds in Vitoria, where it has inspected 4,895 meters of the main sewage outlet, as part of the maintenance service of the Vitoria sanitation network.
  • Protection and recovery of freshwater wetland ecosystems, such as Batuco wetland in Chile, that uses the wastewater treated from La Cadellada purification facility.
  • Implementation of rainwater collection systems for its later use, using around 650 m3 of water in the waste treatment plant in Arraiz, Bilbao.
